What's New!
- Marine Ecology Book Series now available as pdf.
It is a great pleasure for Inter-Research to present the series “Marine Ecology” published by Wiley & Sons from 1970 to 1984 in form of open access.
- MEPS Editors-in-Chief: 29th Annual Report
The Editors-in-Chief of MEPS, O. Kinne and M. Seaman, have prepared their Annual Report to the members of the editorial board. A summary is provided below.
- MEPS' leading position confirmed. According to Eigenfactor.org, a non-commercial project that ranks scientific journals by their influence, MEPS occupies the No. 1 position by Eigenfactor in the categories 'Marine & Freshwater Biology' and 'Oceanography'.
- MEPS continues to grow. The strong rise in the number of submissions to MEPS (1200 manuscripts per year) led to a temporary backlog of accepted manuscripts, and the time from acceptance to publication rose to 7 months; at present it stands at 5 months, and should decrease to 3 months by the end of 2008. To meet the increase in manuscripts, we are hiring more staff; annual production has increased to 25 volumes and MEPS is being published ahead of schedule; submissions that do not fall within the marine ecological scope of MEPS may be redirected to its new companion, Aquatic Biology.
- Website enhancements. An archive of all MEPS articles beginning from Volume 1 (1979) is now freely available for download. Digital object identifier (doi) numbers for all articles are in-cluded in the CrossRef database and enable cross-linking from and to other online articles. A pre-press abstract of each article can be accessed via the MEPS Forthcoming page or via the article's doi. Each abstract page contains a citation export function and a Google Scholar link.
- Centralized ms review procedure. A centralized ms review procedure was introduced in 2007. All mss are now submitted to the Inter-Research office and, where appropriate, redistributed by the Editors-in-Chief to Contributing Editors (CEs). This is accomplished with the help of a new online ms tracking system, XPressTrack (XPT), designed to liberate CEs as far as possible from the clerical tasks associated with the ms review process.
- Editorial Board. The number of MEPS Contributing Editors has been increased from 28 to 44, and the number of Review Editors has risen from 68 to 89 over the past 2 years. We are deeply saddened by the untimely deaths of John Gray, Alan Southward and Ken Tenore, who all served on the MEPS editorial board for more than 25 years. We greatly appreciate the efforts of all Editors, past and present, on behalf of MEPS.
- Theme Sections / Specials
Inter-Research (IR) welcomes Theme Sections (TSs) and Special Issues to be published in its journals. Leading scientists interested in initiating and coordinating such a TS / Special for any IR journal are invited to submit proposals with: (1) List of Guest Editors; (2) List of authors and topics; (3) Timeline (deadline for submission etc.). Target length for a TS / Special is less than 100 printed pages. The mss must be subjected to the usual peer review (3 to 4 referees).
With regard to some TSs currently undergoing review, the role of Dr. Howard Browman has been terminated, since the cooperation between IR and Dr. Browman ended Nov. 5, 2007; Dr. Browman's original role in initiating these TSs is acknowledged. - The co-operation between Inter-Research Science Center (IR) and Dr. Howard I. Browman ended on 05.11.07. He is no longer allowed to act on behalf of IR.
- New staff member of Inter-Research Science Center (IR)
Dr. habil. Hans Heinrich Janssen has joined the IR team in Oldendorf (Germany). He has been appointed Assistant Editor-in-Chief of MEPS and of Aquatic Biology (AB). His research focused on physiology, ecology, toxicology and histology of marine invertebrates. Hans obtained his PhD at the University of Kiel (Germany) in 1980, and served as Assistant Professor at the University of Heidelberg and as Associate Professor at the Institute of Marine Science in Kiel. He has taught and conducted research in the Philippines, Galapagos, Malaysia and the Antarctic. Hans was employed by Germany's Federal Environmental Agency (UBA) and the Federal Institute of Hydrology (BfG), coordinating projects on ecology and monitoring of the Wadden Sea, Elbe River, Baltic Sea, and Antarctic.

- Inter-Research is proud to announce the launch of Aquatic Biology, a companion journal to MEPS and AME. The second print issue (Vol. 1, No. 2) is now available. Complimentary copies can be requested from ir@int-res.com.
- Successful launch of Aquatic Biology. The announcement of Inter-Research Science Center (IR) that Otto Kinne and Howard Browman have founded the new global journal Aquatic Biology (AB) was received by the international scientific community with enthusiastic acclaim. Since July 2007, 216 manuscripts were submitted; 43 mss have been published; 80 mss are under review. AB is thus poised to become a major international journal within a very short time. IR is grateful for the confidence and support that its journals receive from the scientific community. (Updated May 8, 2008).
