Stephen R. Carpenter

Center for Limnology and Department of Zoology, University of Wisconsin-Madison, 680 North Park Street, Madison, WI 53706, USA

Recipient of the International Ecology Institute (ECI) Prize 2000 in limnetic ecology

Professor Stephen R. Carpenter has been elected by the ECI Jury chaired by Professor Wolfgang Wieser (University of Innsbruck, Austria), for his outstanding work on the food web structure of lake ecosystems, which has led to novel concepts on ecosystem functioning and to a unification of fisheries biological and limnological approaches. Born in Kansas City, Missouri, USA, in 1952, Stephen Carpenter is a Professor at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He has received numerous international awards and he is a former President of the Ecological Society of America.

EE Book 15 significantly enriches our knowledge on the ecological dynamics in fresh waters, and provides powerful conceptual bridges between theory and field work. The book focuses on studies of lakes and of regime shifts, providing a synthesis of long-term data using models and statistics. It will help to stimulate the creative thinking required for an adaptive approach to ecosystem management.
