Progress and perspectives in aquatic microbial ecology: Highlights of the SAME 13, Stresa, Italy, 2013

The SAME (Symposium on Aquatic Microbial Ecology) series was established as the result of the merging of 2 existing symposia, the International Workshop on the Measurement of Microbial Activities in the Carbon Cycle of Aquatic Environments and the European Marine Microbiology Symposium (EMMS), during the 7th occasion of the latter (EMMS 7). The SAME meetings have been held every 2 years since then, in different locations around Europe, and have become a prime space for discussion and interaction not just for European scientists, but for the international aquatic microbial community at large. The 13th symposium (SAME 13) was co-hosted by the Italian Institute of Ecosystem Study (Verbania) and the Institute of Marine Science (Venice), and took place in Stresa, Italy, from September 8th to 13th (2013); it brought together 440 scientists from over 50 countries. The SAME 13 AME Special is composed of papers contributed by invited plenary speakers as well as by the recipients of the student presentation awards, and covers a wide range of current topics in aquatic microbial ecology. The Special was published as Virtual Special, i.e. papers were published without delay in regular issues and were simultaneously collated on this separate, online Virtual Special contents page.
