MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION

Submitted manuscripts must (1) not be submitted simultaneously to any other publication outlet; (2) be original, i.e. not published before; (3) have been approved by all immediately involved, e.g. authors, institutional authorities; (4) meet ethics guidelines (see below). Authors are requested to disclose the previous submission history of their manuscript, along with a rationale for its re-submission to ESEP. Submission of a manuscript implies agreement to Inter-Research terms of publication.

All manuscripts must be submitted via the ESEP editorial office, preferably via the online manuscript submission system. Alternatively, manuscripts may be submitted by email or by post. Manuscripts will be handled by the Editor-in-Chief or one of the Editors. Authors are invited to specify their preference, and (in their cover letter) to identify 3 to 5 suitable referees.

1. Please use our online manuscript submission system: click here AUTHOR GATEWAY.

2. If necessary, you may submit your manuscript per email to the ESEP editorial office (esep-submissions@int-res.com). Attach two files (1: the cover letter, which must include the response to reviews if the submission is a revision; and 2: the manuscript) to the above address. Hard copies are NOT required unless electronic submission is impossible. In that case, manuscripts may be submitted - one hard copy and an electronic file on disc - by post.

3. By post: to Inter-Research, Nordbünte 23, 21385 Oldendorf/Luhe, Germany.

PREPARATION OF MANUSCRIPTS

New submissisions and revisions should, if possible, be uploaded or sent as one file (preferably pdf format) containing the complete text, tables, and figures. Once a ms has been accepted, please upload or send it as a word-processing file (e.g. MS Word, not pdf or TeX), together with separate figure files (if any). Large files (>1 MB) can be uploaded to our ftp site (ftp.int-res.com; the ftp site can be freely accessed, but please inform us if you upload anything).

To facilitate and accelerate the production process, please make sure that the ms conforms to the IR style. For the appropriate format, please refer to recent issues of ESEP. Manuscripts of poor quality incur extra costs and delays; this applies particularly to figures and tables. If a manuscript requires excessive changes, we may have to return it, or charge you for the extra work involved in copy editing, typesetting and proofreading. To avoid this, please bring your manuscript in line with the following guidelines:

Title: Please avoid the use of 'A', 'An', 'The', 'On', etc. at the beginning, eliminate unnecessary modifiers, and make the title as logical, specific and concise as possible. The title should preferably have a maximum of 100 characters (ca. 15 words, 2 lines in print).

Provide a running head with 3 to 6 words; e.g. 'Ethics of wetland conservation'.

Authors and addresses: If a manuscript has several authors from different institutions,

Abstracts: All contributions must be preceded by a brief, concise abstract. In the shortest possible way, the abstract should outline the scope of the paper and highlight its main results and conclusions.

Key words: Please include a set of up to 8 searchable key words.

Main body of text: Unusual symbols must be explained; print genus and species names in italics.

Figures and tables: Please carefully prepare figures and tables. They must be numbered and accompanied by brief, precise legends. All symbols and abbreviations used in tables and figures should be explained in the legend. If you have questions about how to prepare figures for publication, please see our Guidelines to Authors on Figure Preparation, or contact our technical staff.

Citation of literature:All literature quoted in the text must be listed, in alphabetical (author names) and chronological (year of appearance) order, at the end of the manuscript. Please adhere closely to Inter-Research format:

Periodicals: Use standard abbreviations according to 'BIOSIS Serial Sources'. You can download a list of journal abbreviations from www.int-res.com/misc/journallist.txt or use the bibliographic database software 'EndNote' . You can obtain styles for IR journals at www.endnote.com/support/enstyles.asp or download here.

Processing: Manuscripts (except Comments and, in some instances, As I See It articles) will be critically evaluated by at least 3 experts: Review Editors or Anonymous Referees. Acceptable manuscripts are usually returned to the author requesting consideration of comments and criticism. When an accepted manuscript is ready for publication, the author will be notified and the date of publication fixed. This date appears at the end of each published contribution.

Speed of publication: Accepted manuscripts are published on the internet within a few days after receiving the proofs back from the author(s).

Please submit revised manuscripts in electronic form as an e-mail attachment or upload to our ftp site at ftp.int-res.com). Most word-processing programs in common use are suitable. Further details on electronic submission are available from our technical staff.
