Advancing dynamic modelling of marine populations and ecosystems
Marine ecosystems continue to be altered by numerous pressures, and it is increasingly recognized that the combined impact may not always be predictable. In response, management is becoming more holistic, using e.g. Integrated Ecosystem Assessments (IEAs) that consider all components – including the human dimension (i.e. social and economic activities and interests). New, dynamic modelling tools are available to support IEA and allow decision-makers to understand and weigh trade-offs. This Theme Section, organised by the ICES Working Group on Integrative, Physical-biological and Ecosystem Modelling (WGIPEM), is designed to highlight state-of-the-art, process-based models and how they are being applied to address a broad range of marine research and management topics. Contributions are encouraged on a variety of themes but especially on: (1) population- to ecosystem-level responses to different individual or interacting pressures, (2) improved depictions of the trophodynamic structure and function of ecosystems, (3) quantifying uncertainty and evaluating the skill of complex models, and (4) simulating ecosystem monitoring and/or management strategy evaluation.

Individual Theme Section articles are published 'Advance View' as soon as they are ready. Once the Theme Section is completed, they will be fully published in a regular volume of MEPS and given a volume number and page range. Theme Section literature cites within the articles will also be updated at that time.
