Department of Hydrobiology, University of Warsaw, 02-097 Warsaw, ul. Banacha 2, Poland

Recipient of the International Ecology Institute (ECI) Prize 1997 in limnetic ecology

Professor Maciej Gliwicz was elected by the ECI Jury chaired by Professor Winfried Lampert (Max-Planck-Institut für Limnologie, Plön, Germany), for his outstanding contributions to the field of plankton ecology, in particular regarding the interactions between phyto- and zooplankton and the mechanisms of top-down and bottom-up control. Born in Warsaw, Poland, Maciej Gliwicz obtained his Ph.D. in 1969 from the University of Warsaw, which always remained his base, while he also conducted research in Panama, USA, Portugal, Mozambique and Germany, as well as in Poland's Mazurian Lake Region. Maciej Gliwicz is now Director of the Department of Hydrobiology of the University of Warsaw.

EE Book 12 is the outcome of years of offshore studies, of intimate personal experience and of extended discussions with colleagues from all parts of the globe. Without losing sight of major contemporary topics, Maciej Gliwicz focuses on strategies of survival and of energy procurement, on the conflict between the need for protection and the search for food, exploring a wealth of facts, concepts and theories.
